Randolph R. Stone

Assistant Inspector General for Evaluations of Space, Intelligence, Engineering and Oversight

Mr. Randolph R. Stone is the Assistant Inspector General for Evaluations of Space, Intelligence, Engineering and Oversight at the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General.

In this capacity he is responsible for conducting evaluations, special investigations and reviews of sensitive DoD programs, weapon systems and operations. He is also responsible for DoD audit and criminal investigation policy and the evaluation of those programs and operations.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Stone served for eight years as the DoD OIG Deputy Inspector General for Policy and Oversight. In this capacity, he was responsible for all DoD audit, law enforcement, and criminal investigative policy functions and the oversight of those functions. He also performed evaluations and special investigations and administered the DoD subpoena program. In addition, Mr. Stone led the DoD OIG Technical Assessment Directorate, which performed engineering evaluations of DoD programs and operations.

Prior to joining the DoD OIG, Mr. Stone served for eight years as the Senior Executive Service Director of Quality, Safety, and Mission Assurance for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). He was responsible for agencywide mission success policy and independent engineering oversight of the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS) and the Missile Defense industrial base. He was also responsible for the safe operation of the Ballistic Missile Defense System and the occupational safety of the MDA workforce.

Prior to MDA, Mr. Stone represented the NASA Office of Safety and Mission Assurance and served for nine years as the Safety and Flight Assurance Manager for the Delta Launch Vehicle and its associated industrial base. He contributed to the successful launch of 22 NASA Delta II missions and the certification of the Delta IV Launch Vehicle.

Mr. Stone began his career in private industry and for 10 years served as a Spacecraft Test Conductor and Test Engineer. He integrated, tested and performed launch preparations for the first six USAF Navstar GPS Spacecraft and for the NASA Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the United States heaviest unmanned spacecraft.

Mr. Stone has a Bachelor in Science in Engineering Technology. He is Level III Certified by the Defense Acquisition Corps in Production, Quality, and Manufacturing and is an FAA licensed Airframe and Power Plant Technician. He is the recipient of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civil Service, the MDA Star Award, the MDA Director Pinnacle Award, six NASA Group and Special Act Awards, the NASA Silver Quality Award, and numerous corporate awards.
