Platte B. Moring III

Inspector General

The Honorable Platte B. Moring III was confirmed as Inspector General of the Department of Defense in December 2025. His distinguished career encompasses both decorated military service and senior leadership in the public and private sectors.

Commissioning as a Military Police officer through Princeton University’s Army ROTC program, Moring later went on to serve as a Judge Advocate in the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania Army National Guard. When called to active duty, he deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. As Rule of Law Officer for Security Sector Reform, he assisted the government in developing a judicial system by working with allied nations to draft a criminal procedure code, collaborate with the Afghan Constitution Commission, and train judges, prosecutors, and defense counsel. The Army awarded Moring the Bronze Star. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving as the Command Judge Advocate of the 213th Area Support Group.

Moring began his legal career as a judicial law clerk to the former Chief Judge of the United States Court of International Trade in New York City. Thereafter hired through the Honors Program, he became a trial attorney with the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.  Moring then returned to his hometown and entered private practice with the Philadelphia law firm of White and Williams LLP, where he became a partner and manager of a regional office of the firm. After nearly three decades as a civil litigator, Moring returned to federal government service as Deputy General Counsel, Legal Counsel, in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. In this capacity, he supervised all litigation involving the Department, managed the Office of Military Commissions, and led the Office of Information and Privacy. Most recently, Moring was an adjunct professor at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, in the Department of Political Science.

Moring holds an A.B. from Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, an M.S. in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a J.D. from Vanderbilt University School of Law.
