David P. Bennett

General Counsel

David P. Bennett became the General Counsel for the Department of War, Office of Inspector General, on April 13, 2026.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Bennett had a long career with the Department of War, Office of General Counsel (OGC), beginning in 2006. His service included the roles of Director, Office of Information Counsel (2016-2026); Special Counsel, Military Justice Review Group (2013-2016); and Associate Deputy General Counsel, OGC (Legal Counsel) (2006-2013).

In addition to his civilian roles, Mr. Bennett is an Air Force reservist, currently serving as the Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Commandant of the Air Force Judge Advocate General’s School. He was commissioned in 1998 and served over seven years on active duty as a judge advocate before transitioning to the reserves. His military legal experience includes positions as an Appellate Military Judge, Acting Staff Judge Advocate, Appellate and Trial Defense Counsel, and Prosecutor.

Mr. Bennett is licensed to practice law in New York State. He received his Juris Doctor degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1998 and his Bachelor of Arts degree from S.U.N.Y Stony Brook in 1993.
