Ms. Courtney V. Fones is the Senior Advisor to the Inspector General, a senior-level (SL) professional in the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General (DoD OIG). She joined the DoD OIG as an auditor in September 2003 and has served as the Senior Advisor since January 2022. In her current role, Ms. Fones provides advice and guidance on DoD OIG operations and support functions leveraging her decades of experience. She reviews DoD OIG written products and provides editorial direction for the office’s reports and advisories. Ms. Fones also oversees statutory publications such as the Semiannual Report to Congress, the Top DoD Management and Performance Challenges, and the Annual Oversight Plan.
Previously working in the DoD OIG’s Audit Component, Ms. Fones performed and led audits of contract award and administration for more than a decade. In 2018, she transitioned to readiness and logistics auditing where she managed audits of training ranges, the DoD supply chain, and transportation. Ms. Fones also has experience with base realignment and closure validation, interagency contracting, and Antideficiency Act violations.
Ms. Fones has a bachelor’s degree in accounting, graduating magna cum laude, from Juniata College and a master’s degree in policy management from Georgetown University. She is also a Certified Fraud Examiner.
