Project Announcement: Review of DoD OIG-Issued Reports Related to Protecting Classified Information (Project No. D2023-D000IG-0114.000)

The purpose of this memorandum is to notify you that we plan to begin the subject review in April 2023. The objective of this project is to summarize unclassified and classified audit and evaluation reports issued by the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General that included findings and recommendations related to: (1) DoD Insider Threats; (2) cybersecurity risk areas within DoD components; and (3) physical or industrial security weaknesses. The project will seek to identify trends, lessons learned, and best practices from our prior work, along with highlighting open recommendations in areas that could be subject to an increased risk of information leaks or unauthorized access to information.

The objective of this summary report was to: (1) summarize unclassified and classified reports and testimonies regarding DoD cybersecurity that the DoD Office of Inspector General, the Government Accountability Office, and other DoD oversight organizations issued between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2022, concerning DoD cybersecurity; (2) identify cybersecurity trends; and (3) provide a status of open DoD cybersecurity-related recommendations.

Evaluation of Department of Defense Voting Assistance Programs for Calendar Year 2021 (DODIG-2022-079)

Publicly Released: April 1, 2022

The objective of this evaluation was to report on the effectiveness of voting assistance programs and the extent of compliance with the voting assistance programs of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force during calendar year 2021. Additionally, we determined whether the Federal Voting Assistance Program Office complied with all requirements in regard to outreach and access efforts for voters covered by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.

Project Announcement: Summary of Reports and Testimonies Regarding DoD Cybersecurity From July 1, 2020, Through June 30, 2022 (Project No. D2022-D000CS-0046.000)

We plan to begin the subject audit in December 2021. The objective of this audit is to (1) summarize unclassified and classified reports and testimonies regarding DoD cybersecurity that the DoD Office of Inspector General, the Government Accountability Office, and other DoD oversight organizations issued between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2022, concerning DoD cybersecurity; (2) identify cybersecurity trends; and (3) provide a status of open DoD cybersecurity-related recommendations. We may revise the objective as the audit proceeds, and we will also consider suggestions from management for additional or revised objectives.

Evaluation of the Department of Defense’s Actions to Control Contaminant Effects from Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances at Department of Defense Installations (DODIG-2021-105)

The objective of this evaluation was to determine the extent that the DoD has taken steps to: identify, mitigate, and remediate contamination from perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at DoD installations; and identify populations exposed to PFAS at DoD installations and inform them of the associated health and safety concerns.
