Summary of Reports Issued Regarding Department of Defense Cybersecurity From July 1, 2017, Through June 30, 2018 DODIG-2019-044

Our objective was to (1) summarize unclassified and classified reports issued and testimonies made from the DoD oversight community and the Government Accountability Office (GAO) between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018, that included DoD cybersecurity issues; (2) identify cybersecurity risk areas for DoD management to address based on the five functions of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), “Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity,” April 16, 2018 (Cybersecurity Framework); and (3) identify the open DoD cybersecurity recommendations.

Top DoD Management Challenges – Fiscal Year 2019

The following is the DoD Office of Inspector General’s (OIG) statement on the top management and performance challenges facing the DoD. The DoD OIG identified these challenges based on a variety of factors, including DoD OIG oversight work, research, and judgment; oversight work done by other DoD components; oversight work conducted by the GAO; and input from DoD officials. While we reviewed DoD statements, documents, and assessments of these and other critical issues, we identified these top challenges independently.

Lead Inspector General for Operation Inherent Resolve I Quarterly Report to the United States Congress I July 1, 2018 - September 30, 2018

This is the 15th Lead Inspector General (Lead IG) report to the United States Congress on Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), the overseas contingency operation to combat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The report covers the period July 1, 2018, to September 30, 2018, and summarizes the quarter’s key events and describes completed, ongoing, and planned Lead IG and partner agency oversight work related to OIR. This report also includes a brief overview on three other OCOs designated as such on February 9, 2018: Operation Yukon Journey, the Northwest Africa Counterterrorism operation and the East Africa Counterterrorism operation.
