Press Release: Fiscal Year 2024 Oversight Plan for the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General

Inspector General Robert P. Storch announced today that the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General released its “Fiscal Year 2024 Oversight Plan.”

The plan describes the DoD OIG’s ongoing and planned oversight in support of key focus areas and the DoD OIG’s FY 2024 assessment of the Top DoD Management and Performance Challenges.  The DoD OIG considered factors such as previous oversight products, potential project benefits, and input from DoD senior leaders and Congress in developing the annual plan.

“This oversight plan is a critical roadmap for fulfilling our oversight mission,” said IG Storch. “It helps ensure that our audits, evaluations, and other programmatic oversight address the most significant risks facing the DoD.”

In addition to aligning the DoD OIG’s oversight work with its assessment of the Top DoD Management and Performance Challenges, the Oversight Plan also identifies three overarching focus areas for the DoD OIG’s oversight in FY 2024: Ukraine security assistance, DoD programs and activities in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command area of responsibility, and DoD financial statement auditability.

Specifically, the Oversight Plan consists of 83 potential projects, comprising 54 audits and 29 evaluations.  It also describes 93 ongoing projects that will continue into FY 2024.  The projects align with either one of the identified Management Challenges or with statutory requirements not aligned with the Challenges.

Beyond the audits and evaluations described in the Oversight Plan, the DoD OIG also operates the DoD Hotline for reporting waste, fraud, and abuse; investigates DoD senior official misconduct, whistleblower reprisal, and criminal activities by or impacting the DoD; provides education on fraud awareness and whistleblower reprisal protections; and provides quarterly reporting to Congress on oversight of several ongoing overseas contingency operations.
